Just Go For It!

What gets you jazzed? Gets your internal fire going? Gets you so energized you just can’t not engage with the activity?

Putting yourself out there and taking risks is a tricky one. Often times, we’re waiting for circumstances to be just right and in truth, most often they aren’t. Get present with yourself and really pay close attention to what you are choosing. Life has a way of mirroring back exactly what is needed; whether it’s the people around us, or the circumstances. Noticing what is and isn’t working for you can be a powerful perspective check-in.

A quote from Richard Bach that shows up frequently during a coaching conversation; “Argue for your limitations, and sure enough, they’ll be yours”. Having the awareness that we can talk ourselves out of what we may want dearly can be a springboard to shifting our behaviors and/or attitudes towards an alternate outcome.

Steve Jobs said it best: “Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure — these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.”

  • What brings a smile to your face?
  • What energizes and ignites your spirit?
  • Looking back on your peak moments in life – what was happening?
  • What is it time to stop doing? Start doing?

A couple of my favorite coaching isms that may help in the quandary of indecision are “control your controllables” and “know the difference between being attached to a goal and being committed to a goal”. Sometimes we have to recalibrate but we’ll never know if we don’t take that chance. As the Chinese proverb goes – Fall down 7 get up 8.
